2006 Inaugural Class of Hartwell Fellows

Memphis, TN, December 29 - The Hartwell Foundation announced its 2006 inaugural class of Hartwell Fellows, which provide funding to US citizens for postdoctoral training in biomedical science at select research institutions in the United States. The Fellowships offer support for two years at $50,000 direct cost per year to support scientists in the early stages of biomedical research careers by enabling them to pursue further specialized training as part of their career development.

Institutions that fully participated in the 2006 process for Hartwell Individual Biomedical Research Awards received the right to designate a Hartwell Fellowship award, effective January 2007. As a result of a change in the postdoctoral status of a Fellow, the sponsoring institution may redesignate the Fellowship within Hartwell guidelines, with no adjustment in funding provided by the Foundation. In 2006, qualifying institutions designated the following individuals to receive Fellowship support from The Hartwell Foundation:

Nancie Jo MacIver, MD, Ph.D., School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics

  • St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

Samantha Cicero, Ph.D., Department of Developmental Neurobiology

  • The Johns Hopkins University

Jennifer K. Lee, MD, Department of Pediatric Critical Care

  • The University of Michigan

Stephanie Kaddison, Ph.D., Department of Cell and Developmental Biology

  • The University of Wisconsin Madison

James H. Holmes, Ph.D., Department of Medical Physics

  • University of California, San Francisco

Walter E. Sipe, MD, Department of Pediatrics: resigned effective June 2008 to pursue a clinical training opportunity in psychiatry at UCSF.

Walter Lam, Ph.D., Department of Pediatrics: appointed  to fulfill remaining 12 months

  • University of Pennsylvania

Nathan J. Sniadecki, Ph.D., Department of Bioengineering: resigned September 2007 to accept faculty position in the Department of Engineering, University of Washington, Seattle

James A. Cooper Jr., Ph.D., Department of Bioengineering: appointed September 2007, to fulfill remaining 16 months

Kristie Henchir Burgess, Ph.D., Department of Bioengineering: resigned April 2007 to pursue a career in industry, principally the development of new biotechnology products

Timothy M. Maul, Ph.D. (2007), Department of Bioengineering: appointed May 2007 with 24 month commitment from the University of Pittsburgh

Katherine L. Lillard, Ph.D., Department of Pediatrics, Department of Molecular Biology

The Hartwell Foundation is honored to provide financial support to these outstanding young scientists. Each qualifying institution chose an exceptional individual of high promise in the field of biomedical research, enabling the recipient to achieve professional training in an area of science that they passionately wish to pursue.
