Richard Smith, Manager Scientific Business Development As Manager of Scientific Business Development for The Hartwell Foundation, Richard Smith is responsible for leading business development from within The Foundation’s research portfolio; encouraging the translation of technologies and discoveries and where appropriate, guiding their potential commercialization in the desire that children will have access to the healthcare advances created through the funded research. Mr. Smith is an accomplished business professional with over 20 years of experience in the area of children’s health. Prior to joining The Hartwell Foundation in 2011, Richard held several leadership positions in the biomedical industry, including: Founder of Tutela Industries, a privately held company chartered to assess early stage medical technologies within the state of Maryland with the goal to provide commercial guidance on business plans, product development and funding pathways; Chief Executive of BrainZ Instruments, a biotechnology spinout from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, focused on commercializing research technology in neurological assessment of high risk newborns; and General Manager of Perinatal for GE Healthcare, the market leader for a number of technologies within the perinatal and pediatric areas of healthcare. His prior work experience also included various positions managing business development, marketing and sales. Richard began undergraduate studies at the University of Tennessee and received his M.B.A
from Loyola College in Maryland. He holds both a
European and U.S. Patent and has Patents pending from
the USTPO. Richard resides in Baltimore, MD and is
married with two children (twins).
